Procrastination therapy:

I just feel like doing something fun over work

You feel like watching YouTube, playing games and doing other fun stuff. But do you really WANT to do all that stuff? In the end of the day, year or life, when you ask yourself: “Is this something I really wanted to do or was it just that I felt like doing it?” What will be the answer?

You want to have healthy body, successful career and meaningful relationships and so on, you just never seem to feel like doing the work that would get you there.

As you see, the problem of procrastination lies in the feelings and emotions. You wish you would just feel like doing it, but your feelings are usually just the opposite.

There are 3 ways to “handle” your negative emotions of discomfort which prevent you from doing the work:

  1. You escape emotions by doing something fun, like scrolling social media. Feeling of discomfort disappears and is temporary replaced with feeling of joy - sounds familiar? :) Meanwhile another day disappears in emptiness.

  2. You fight and overcome unpleasant feelings with willpower and discipline and do it regardless of how you don’t feel like doing it. Not many people can do that. And the good news is you don’t have to do it because:

  3. You can eliminate negative feelings of discomfort which prevent you from beginning a task. When there are no negative feelings, there is no need to run away from these feelings or fight them with sheer willpower.

All negative feelings come from your thoughts. When you think about how long a task will take, this will most likely trigger some sort of negative feeling, which will make it harder for you to begin a task. There are all sorts of thoughts you might have regarding a task. The more thoughts about the task, the more negative feelings will they cause and less likely will be for you to begin working.

So, to eliminate negative feelings, you have to eliminate thoughts that cause these feelings. The less thoughts mean less negative feelings (discomfort). And the good thing is, you can do that by just lying on the couch, without moving a finger.
