Procrastination solved:

Stage 3: Calming your mind and removing discomfort

Once you stabilize your energy and motivation levels by following steps in stages 1 and 2, you might still find yourself struggling with certain productive tasks.

Fundamentally, reason for you not taking action is always the same: You don’t feel like doing it.

So, what exactly is this feeling that prevents you from taking action?

It is usually a mix of different feelings and emotions that are triggered when you think about beginning a task. If there wasn’t this general feeling of discomfort, you would find any task much easier to begin with.

So, when you start feeling discomfort, you have 3 options:

  1. You fight this feeling by using willpower, strong motivation and self discipline. If you were able to do that, you wouldn’t be reading this book.

  2. You run away from this feeling, by doing something that instantly replaces feeling of discomfort with feeling of enjoyment. Stuff like scrolling social media, playing video games, watching tv. For majority of people this is the choice they choose for the rest of their lives.

  3. But there is a third option. Not battling discomfort with willpower, not running away from it, but eliminating discomfort, so there is nothing left to battle and nothing left to run away from.

Discomfort is a feeling.

Science tells us that all feelings and emotions are caused by our thoughts.

When you think about the reward, you feel good and excited. But the moment you start thinking about how much time this will take, how many problems you will have to overcome, you begin feeling discomfort.

So if there was less thoughts, there would be less emotions including feeling of discomfort that prevents you from taking action. It is simple as that.

In the next chapter I will teach you a simple mind trick you can use at any time to calm your mind and eliminate discomfort, making any task much less draining. For many of my students, this was the only piece of puzzle they were missing before they could start their upward spiral of productivity and fulfulment.

Mind trick

WARNING, because a lot of people do this wrong.

Don’t get discouraged if the first time you try the trick it is a little challenging.

You don’t have to do it perfectly to feel the effect of discomfort disappearing.

The first time you do this, it is going to take about 3 minutes, but later in future you will be able to do it in few moments without even thinking about it.

It is very important you closely follow mental instructions the first time you do it, because onlythen you should notice sort of a mental click, which makes you understand the root of procrastination and how to deal with it.

In the next chapter I will present you with an easy way to implement mental trick in your everyday life without having to change your behaviour patterns.

How to make calming your mind a subconscious habit

Until you are able to calm your mind, you will be constantly under a waterfall of thoughts and emotions. Everything will just feel hard. You will have no focus and no productivity.

On the other hand, calming your mind is the only habit you need to develop. Because it allows you to take action on everything else.

A lot of people when they want to calm their mind for the first time, find it very challenging because their thoughts and emotions are all over the place. Please understand these thoughts and emotions are always there, it is just that you now actually notice them when you try to calm your mind.

Also

If you noticed your mind being very active, this is a good sign, because noticing a problem is the first step towards solving the problem.

Now all you have to do is to quickly use the mind trick as many times as possible during the day, until it becomes a subconscious habit.

Don’t worry you don’t have to stop doing anything, you just to do it differently, with awareness of your thoughts.

So what I did for myself is to set a timer on my phone to go off every 15 minutes during a day. When I would hear sound of timer, this would remind me to check what is happening in my mind.

If I was scrolling social media at the time timer went off, I didn’t stop doing it. I just kept scrolling while observing my feelings and emotions in the meanwhile.

It doesn’t matter if you do it only for a few seconds and then switch back to autopilot. Calming your mind is never ending process. The more you do it, the easier it becomes for you to do it.

Remember how we explained that more thoughts in your mind mean more mental energy spent? As you become better in calming your mind, you will notice all sorts of positive changes in your life:

  • You will have more energy for chasing your goals
  • You will not feel tired all the time
  • You will sleep better because less thoughts at bed time makes you fall asleep quicker and improves quality of sleep
  • You will not feel discomfort when facing productive work
  • Feelings of fear and anxiety will evaporate, making you feel more at peace
  • You will be in control of your thoughts, impulses and behaviour.

To speed up the process of calming your mind becoming your subconscious habit, I have developed a simple mobile app, which you can get free by clicking below. App includes audio guidance for calming your mind which you can access with one tap. In app you can set timer to go off every 15 minutes (for example) to remind you of method we described in this book. App also includes personalized motivational slideshow which can boost your motivation at the beginning.

Spending (mental) energy

Every thought, decision or action will burn your reserve of mental energy. If you are also feeling unpleasant emotions such as anxiety, fear and discomfort, this will make you think about them and burn even more energy.

If your mind is constntly racing, worrying and calculating your decisions, your mental energy will be drained extremely quickly, regardless of how good you eat and exercise.

It is like carrying the backpack full of useless rocks when you go for a walk. Walking itslef might not require that much energy and motivation. But when you carry this unnecessary backpack, even simple tasks become draining.

For example: If you hate your current job, you probabbly feel mentally drained and once you come home you have no energy left to spend it on getting new skills or thinking about new opportunities, working on your hobby project. This happens because during the work your mind is not calm and is constantly thinking about how you hate your job and how would like to to something else.

Calm mind will make you spend only the necessary amount of energy. When doing your job or any task other task with calm mind, you will notice you have much more energy in afternoon for your hobbies, side projects and excercise.

Anxiety, overthinking, racing mind, problems focusing, mental exaustion and similar symptoms are all related to one cause: your mind not being calm. While stages 1 and 2 will get you out of procrastination rut, allowing you to be productive for at least 2 hours a day, cultivating a a calm mind will prolong spans of productivity by saving you energy and removing feeling of discomfort.
